The first Read & Meet of the season on 23 September 2015 brings us the versatile Davide Enia, one of the most important Italian playwrights, who is also an actor and director. Together with the author we will discuss his internationally acclaimed debut novel On Earth as It Is in Heaven (trans. Antony Shugaar – Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 2012). The novel tells the story of how a shy street child grows up to become a boxing champion in the highly ignitable city of Palermo. It also covers a sizeable chunk of Sicilian history, from the bombing of Palermo during World War II to the bloody Mafia killings of the following decades.
The ‘Read & Meet @ Passa Porta' reading club gives readers the chance to share their reading impressions not only with other readers, but also with the author. Passa Porta staff member and book lover Steven Van Ammel hosts the discussion. The event takes place in English.
Unfortunately, the novel On Earth as It Is in Heaven is either not available or no longer available in French and Dutch. Together with Davide Enia we have decided to base the discussion on an extract from the novel, which will be made available in PDF format in Italian, English and Dutch. Click on one of the links to download the fragment selected by the author in the language of your choice.
Here are some of the topics and issues we hope to evoke with Davide Enia:
the role of violence in Sicilian society;
the role of boxing in the novel, not only as a plot element but also as a structural component;
writing about the Mafia, from Sciascia to Saviano;
oral vs literary culture in Italy.
Given the limited number of places, booking is recommended.
